My 6 Month Challenge

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to make all your own clothing instead of going out and buying things? Well,I did.

From the beginning of September 2013 to the end of February 2014,I decided to challenge myself to only wear clothing that I had made. There were a few exception: under garments, workout clothing, and outer layers(cardigans and coats) but other than that I made it all or wore items, I had made in the past. I have been sewing for almost 20 years and I have never put much time into sewing for myself, other than a few special things, like my wedding dress. I wanted to challenge myself, to apply the things that I teach my students, on myself. I needed this challenge to make myself find time to develop patterns for me. I must say there is nothing better than someone recognizing what you are wearing and then getting to say, “Well, thanks I made it.” Over the six months, I did struggle and there were days I felt limited but by the end it seemed natural and comfortable. Who doesn’t want to wear clothing made that is uniquely their own.

During the challenge I created:

  • 3 woven skirts
  • 3 pairs of Jean style Pants
  • 3 pairs of  Stretch Skinny Pants
  • 1 pair slim fit ankle length Navy Pants
  • 1 drawstring Lightweight Denim Pants
  • 3 Knit Skirts
  • 9 Dresses and Tunics
  • 20 Tops
  • 2 Cardigans
  • 1 pair of shorts

Totaling 46 items made in Six Months

I also wore 1skirt, and 3 dresses, I had previously made.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with what I accomplished. I actually donated the majority of the clothes, that I had prior to the challenge. I only kept the items that I really loved.

Please checkout my photo gallery below. I wore the items below mixed and matched with each other during the 6 month period. These are now the staples of my wardrobe.

I love this post! I have wanted to design and sew my own wardrobe for so long!! I was wondering if I could ask a somewhat personal question, How much did you spend on fabric and supplies for your beautiful wardrobe?

Hi Chelsea- I was very fortunate to have been given a large amount of knit fabrics a few months prior to starting this journey. That is one reason why you see the same colors repeated. I also worked from the stash that I already had. I would estimate though that I would have spent around $150 over the six months.-Addie
